SOUTH WEST CHAMPIONS.
A scorching weekend at Millfield School, Somerset saw a highly successful Cornish schools athletics team return from the South West Combined Events with two individual winners and a winning team that will move onto the finals in September.
Jordanna Morrish (Truro High) had a superb days performance in the junior girls pentathlon accruing 3043 points. This placed her third on the all time list in the South West, was a National Standard performance and as I write, places her number one in the UK. Needless to say breaking through the 3000 points barrier also gives her a new County record.
Harry Woodward (Wadebridge) was also triumphant in the gruelling two day Inter boys Octathlon. Most of his performances were personal bests. At the end of day one he was in second place but a superb second day saw him move into the lead where he stayed all day winning by 20 points!
The Inter girls, all a year young in the competition, had a great two day heptathlon beating the Wiltshire team by over 100 points. The team of Kiani Pay (Truro), Jenny Baker (Truro), Monica Lewis (Wadebridge) & Alice Vage (Penair) will now represent the South West at the Finals in September at Stoke.
Joining them will be Philippa Brett (St. Austell College) who also had a great two day heptathlon scoring 3896 points finishing in second place, a position she had held for most of the two days.
Jordanna was ably supported in the team pentathlon competition by Milly Deacon (Truro High), Ellis-Jade Davey (Truro High) & Maria Brett (Poltair) to a good third place. The winning Wiltshire team beat the all time SW score which Cornwall had achieved last year.
Harry Woodward was supported in the Inter boys Octathlon by Sam Chun (Wadebridge) a newcomer to the sport who needless to say produced many personal best performances. Sadly, a late withdrawal meant we were unable to have a team competing.
The junior boys team of Ed Holmes (Cape Cornwall), Andrew Coad (Liskeard) & Kieran Rowe (Penrice) were all newcomers to combined events athletics and finished a creditable fourth place with 5833 points in their pentathlon competition. Ed Holmes was the top scorer breaking through the 2000 points total but all three athletes improved beyond recognition from the County Championships results.
