South West Schools Athletic Championships

Cornwall’s top performer at the South West Schools Athletics Championships at Exeter on Saturday was senior boy Lee Hamilton from Wadebridge. His winning times in the 110m & 400m hurdles were both national standard times.

Intermediate girl Philippa Brett (Poltair) was second in her two hurdles races of 80m & 300m. In the latter she did a national entry standard and also equalled the County record. Another intermediate girl Lamorna Newman (Helston) had a full day of competing finishing 3rd in the 300m and 2nd in the 200m, this performance was a national entry standard and also equalled the county record.

Matt Halton (Bodmin) in the intermediate boys won the shot and was second in the discus. Both performances being national standard and in the discus he improved upon his county record set the previous week.

In the Senior girls' 400m, Katie Hewitt ... ... comes in second to Nicola George to give Cornwall a 1st and 2nd

Cornwall had the first two runners in the senior girls 400m with Nicola George (Tretherras) and Katie Hewitt (Truro College) both running powerfully in the home straight. Both girls formed part of the winning relay team with Deborah Fleming and Emma Wagstaff both from Truro College.

Charles Gunning (Truro College) won the senior boys 800m setting a new county record erasing Neil Caddy’s 1994 time.

In the Junior girls' 1500m, Amy Sweet finishes 4th ... ... as does Maria Brett in the Junior girls' 75m hurdles

Two junior girls finishing 4th in their finals qualified for the National schools, Amy Sweet (Penrice) in the 1500m and Maria Brett (Poltair) in the 75m hurdles.

Callum Jones gave maximum effort after finishing 4th in Race 2 of the Junior boys' 800m A clean changeover in the Senior girls' relay - the Cornwall team came 1st
