South West Schools Track & Field Championships
Exeter Arena 18th June 2011
Despite strong swirling winds and many heavy short showers the Cornish athletes competing at the South West Schools Athletic Championships at Exeter on Saturday did themselves proud.
Of the 44 athletes, there were 22 athletic performances that had Cornish athletes on the medal podium of top three places.

Star athlete was Matt Halton (Bodmin) in his final year of senior boys winning both the shot & discus. His discus win added 3.50m to his County record. Sam Harry (Truro Coll) was second in the 800m. Senior girls not wishing to be out done both produced County records, Philippa Brett (St.Austell Coll) being second in the 400m hurdles and Lamorna Newman (Truro Coll) winning the triple jump.

Junior girl athletes Molly Long (Wadebridge) won the 800m win a strong run leading throughout the race. Charlotte Cayton-Smith (Tretherras) won a tactical 1500m race with a perfectly timed sprint in the home straight. Yvonne Chart (Truro) won the B 1500m race.

In the Inter girls it was field event athletes who excelled. Kiani Pay (Truro) was third in the shot and Jordanna Morrish (Truro High) was second in both the high jump & long jump.
Kiani threw 10.52 metres - an entry standard which won her a place in the National Championships
Despite the strong winds there were fine middle distance performances for the Inter boys races. Andrew Worden (Helston) was just outkicked for second place in the 800m. In the 1500m good team work lead to Hobie Martin (Tretherras) taking second place and Callum Jones (Helston) in third place. Tom Rawet (Helston) lead from start to finish to win the 1500m Steeplechase.

But, it was the new junior boy athletes who performed way beyond expectations. Liam Prynn (Penryn) ran a strong race to take second place in the 100m. Kieran Westlake (Truro) was second in the shot adding half a metre to last weekend's distance. In the discus Patrick Swan (Camborne) improved by 3.50m for second place and was well supported by Daniel Head (Redruth) who achieved a national entry standard in fifth place. A superb last round jump gave Oliver Clark (R.Lander) not only first place in the triple jump but also yet another County record.

A team of 19 athletes have been selected to compete in the All England Athletic Championships at Gateshead in July.
